And which variables might increase the chance of (re)victimization? How can interventions help to prevent crime? How can victims of violence and crime overcome their victimization?

If you are intrigued by questions about the psychology of violence and crime, and you are not satisfied with easy answers, consider entering the master's degree programme Clinical Forensic Psychology and Victimology. In this programme we aim to understand acts of violence and crime from both the victims' and the offenders' perspective.

You will gain a theoretical insight into the correlates of violence and crime and their consequences. Moreover, you will acquire practical skills to enable you to assess and intervene in both offender and victim contexts. Our unique integrative approach aims to highlight the many psychological nuances between the black-and-white of the victim and offender dichotomy.

I felt more confident because of the knowledge gained from the master's programme and the support from my internship supervision group.

I started thinking about the master's in Clinical Forensic Psychology and Victimology after taking courses in Forensic Psychology and Sexology in the third year of my bachelor's degree. I was instantly excited, and working with the forensic group seemed like a real challenge. That excitement totally paid off during the master's programme: the year flew by.

What I loved most about last year was the small scale of the master's programme. Everyone knew each other, and the teachers knew all the students as well...
Plus, the skills course helped me feel more prepared to work with forensic clients. We had a professional actor play an offender, and we got feedback from him and our classmates.

I wrote my thesis at a forensic psychiatric clinic and did my internship in addiction care. These experiences taught me a lot and here I had my first actual client contact with forensic clients. It was a bit intimidating at first, but I felt more confident because of the knowledge gained from the master's programme and the support from my internship supervision group.

Now that I've graduated, I'm starting as a psychologist in the forensic branch of addiction care. I'm really excited about it and have very positive memories of the past year.

To my surprise, I was inspired to do a PhD

My first considerations for Forensic Psychology came with the wave of true crime that swept into the public over the past years. I listened to a plethora of podcasts and was slowly informed about all types of incidents and perpetrators of the past 50 or so years.

The programme brought us closer to difficult topics and used practical sessions with fellow students or lectures with a wide range of topics, which caused a quite comfortable and digestible mix throughout the year...
Additionally, the involvement of an actor to push us out of our comfort zones and make us realize what it may take to be a forensic psychologist was incredibly valuable.

I was allowed to come up with my own topic for my thesis, which slowly developed into a long-lasting and intense qualitative research of public opinions on pedophilia with a large dataset in which I categorized people's sentiments. I believe that I had a unique chance to conduct research with something I was genuinely interested in, something that I want to work on in the future and with something that meant that my motivation was continuously high, while also working in a framework that challenged me.

To my surprise, I was inspired to do a PhD. After this intense educational year, I want to follow this very path and hope to conduct research on the topic of sexual offences committed against children that focuses on prevention of people at risk, non-offenders or to prevent further offending. Later on in my career, though, I hope to combine my research efforts with therapy.

This research provided me with valuable insight into the workings of a forensic psychiatric clinic and practical experience in the field.

My name is Yvonne Smid. I am 24 years old and currently enrolled in the master's degree programme in Clinical Forensic Psychology and Victimology. Prior to this, I completed my bachelor's degree in Psychology at the University of Groningen, which influenced my decision to remain in the city for my master's.

During my bachelor's programme, we took a course called 'Working with Psychology', where various healthcare professionals discussed their daily work, linking it to the different master's specializations offered at the University of Groningen...
The programme allows students to structure their year according to their preferences, so I chose to start with my thesis in November.

For my master's thesis, I conducted research at GGZ Drenthe, in the Forensic Psychiatric Clinic (FPK) Assen. In this clinic, a token economy system is used, rewarding patients for desirable behaviors like taking a walk or getting up on time. This research provided me with valuable insight into the workings of a forensic psychiatric clinic and practical experience in the field.

The master's programme accommodates about 30 students, fostering a close-knit community. Together, we take all the skills courses that prepare us for professional practice, creating a valuable learning environment.

Currently, I work as a sociotherapist at the F.P.C. van Mesdag Clinic, a forensic psychiatric clinic where patients receive treatment following the commission of an offence. I work at an intake department where various psychiatric disorders are present, allowing me to learn and observe a wide range of mental conditions. Starting in September, I will also be completing my internship hours in the diagnostics department of the same clinic. Upon completion, I hope to start working as an assistant case manager at the Mesdag Clinic.

Besides giving you the knowledge and skills to obtain a position as a psychologist in several fields, our master's also gives you a solid foundation for postgraduate study and training in clinical psychology, forensic psychology and victimology.

Options for advanced training in clinical (forensic) psychology:

In The Netherlands (Dutch language programs only)

  • "Gezondheidszorgpsycholoog” (2 year programme);
  • "Klinisch psycholoog” (3 year programme on top of the “gezondheidszorgpsycholoog” training).

In Germany (German language programs only)

  • Licensure as “Psychologische/Psychotherapeut/in” (3 year full-time or 5 year part-time) to get paid by the statutory health insurance;
  • Licensure “Heilpraktiker Psychotherapie” (HPG, no extra requirements) to be legally allowed to treat patients, but not eligible to get paid by the statutory health insurance.
Note: Following the master's track Clinical Forensic Psychology & Victimology does NOT automatically guarantee meeting the criteria for admission to:
  • The Dutch postmaster's training program for “gezondheidszorgpsycholoog”
    You can check requirements about the postmaster's clinical training in the Netherlands at https://www.rug.nl/gmw/masters/psychology/postmaster/;
  • The German postmaster's training program “Psychologische/Psychotherapeut/in".
For more information about the postmaster's training in Germany check requirements locally as they differ from state to state, some requiring a 2-year master's programme or extra credits.
